How to use Turmeric for Heartburn

Turmeric has been known for centuries for the health benefits it provides. It has been used for the treatment of various diseases, including stomach and digestive problems. Heartburn is one of the digestive issues for which turmeric is used as an alternative therapy. The properties of turmeric may be effective in preventing and alleviating heartburn symptoms.

Heartburn is a burning sensation in the chest due to the reflux of stomach acid into the food pipe (esophagus). It is caused due to relaxation of the LES (lower esophageal sphincter) muscle. Unhealthy lifestyle, poor diet, alcohol etc. are some of the major contributors to this condition. Heartburn is a very common condition which is occasionally experienced by some people, its negligence can lead to a more severe condition called GERD (Gastroesophageal reflux disease).   

Antacids are the commonly used medication to get relief from heartburn. But these OTC medications like antacids do not solve the problem from its root. That’s the reason, more people are now opting to alternative health therapy to treat heartburn. Turmeric comes with potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. This makes it very effective for the treatment of heartburn, stomach ulcers and inflammation. It lowers the acidity and symptoms associated with it.

Improper digestion is known to be one of the biggest reason behind heartburn. Indigestion puts pressure on the sphincter muscle to open and stomach acid flow back into the food pipe. Turmeric improves your digestion by enhancing the formation of bile juices and by promoting contraction of the gall bladder. Turmeric can help in several ways to improve digestion, which ultimately prevents heartburn.

Turmeric powder can be added to the curry as a spice, to give curry a spicy flavor and vibrant color. This herbal medicinal and edible plant can be used as a coloring agent in mustards, curries, cheese and butter.

Curcumin is one of the bioactive agent of turmeric and is believed to be responsible for most of its benefits. Curcumin contains polyphenol antioxidant, which comes with potent anti-bacterial, ant-iviral and anti-cancer capabilities. Curcumin reduces the inflammation caused by heartburn or acid reflux.  

How to take turmeric to ease heartburn

Turmeric’s stems can be grounded into a powder or you can directly purchase it from any grocery store. The most common ways to consume turmeric is by adding it to your recipes or drink turmeric tea. You could also directly consume organic turmeric extract supplements, to get right amounts of turmeric for healing purpose.

It’s recommended that you do not consume more than 1500 mg of turmeric in a day. Natural therapy experts believe that to increase the effectiveness of turmeric, black pepper should be taken along with it.

Although turmeric has various health benefits, there isn’t enough medical research done to confirm its role in heartburn prevention and management. You should consult with your doctor before starting any alternative therapy. It may interfere with your current medication. Your doctor can recommend the best treatment option based on your current medications.
