Heartburn is a feeling which starts with a slight hiccup, followed by a burning sensation in the chest and throat. It is caused by the upward flow of stomach acid into the esophagus (food pipe). Most commonly heartburn is caused by the foods you eat, especially spicy, fatty or acidic foods. There are other factors as well which can contribute to heartburn like certain medications, pregnancy, smoking, obesity etc.
Another common trigger for heartburn could be wearing clothes too tight around the stomach. This could include shape wear or a belt fastened too tight. As per a research published in the Journal Gut, it has been reported that tight clothes can cause changes in the cells at the junction between the stomach and esophagus which can cause heartburn.
One of the reason behind tight clothes causing heartburn is that they put extra pressure on the stomach. As you know, the stomach lies in between the breastbone and belly button. When you wear tight clothes or tight belt, it cause stomach acid to move upwards the esophagus, causing heartburn.
Another reason behind this discomfort cause by tight clothes is that it makes the stomach feel more gaseous. It’s because when there is pressure on the abdomen, it affects the digestion process. This interference in the digestion causes heartburn or acid reflux.
As per a study recently conducted, it has been reported that wearing a tight waist belts has led to high incidence of inflammation and short-term acid reflux. Important point to note here is that, none of these people had any history related to acid reflux or heartburn. Even tight pants or skinny jeans which are too tight around the waist can aggravate your heartburn. These clothes push the stomach upwards causing contents of stomach to rush back into the food pipe (esophagus).
Although there are a number of triggers for heartburn, but wearing some comfortable clothes can definitely will give you some relief. Always wear clothes in which you feel relaxed. Most people who experience heartburn, have reported discomfort at night. So, instead of wearing a pair of yoga pants and T-shirt, you shall try wearing a loose nightshirt or nightgown that doesn’t put pressure on your stomach while sleeping.
